The prevalence of diabetes is increasing globally and India is no exception. WHO estimation of the prevalence of diabetes in adults indicates an expected total rise of > 120% from 135 million in 1995 to 300 million in 2025. These numbers also include women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). GDM is considered as a transient abnormality of glucose intolerance during pregnancy. Women with GDM are at increased risk of future diabetes as are their children and following subsequent generations. This fact should alert the physicians the necessity to devote special attention to this segment of population especially in developing countries.

The diagnosis of GDM gives us an unique opportunity in identifying individuals who will be benefited by early therapeutic intervention with diet, exercise and normalizing the weight to delay or possibly even prevent the onset of the disease. In the Indian context, the prevalence of GDM is steadily increasing from 2% in 1982 to 72 in 1991 and which has doubled to 16.55% in 2002.

This phenomenal increase in the prevalence of GDM prompted us to form ‘Diabetes In Pregnancy Study Group India (DIPSI)' in 2004 and was formally inaugurated by Prof. Jeremy J N Oats – Secretary General, International Association for Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups on 12th evening December 2004. This group is necessary as within the next decade the country will be having 20 million women in reproductive age and there is a need to have systematic study on pregnancy medicine. Several doctors with interest in the field of diabetes and pregnancy are joining hands in organizing and continuing the clinical, academic and research activities of the DIPSI. In this endeavour DIPSI would be the fore runner for forming many groups in different medical problems of pregnancy in the future.
